Christopher Columbus and the USVI | CaribbeanTravelMag.com

The history of some of Christopher Columbus’ voyages to the New World is hotly debated, but it is commonly accepted that on his second voyage, Columbus visited the island of St. Croix on November 14th, 1493, anchoring near Christiansted in the area now known as Salt River Bay. He called the island Santa Cruz, which translates to “Holy Cross.” The island was already inhabited by the Caribs, and Columbus’ men who had disembarked on the island in search of fresh water and provisions were forced to cut their visit short.

The Salt River Bay area is now an ecological preserve known for its mangrove forests and wildlife.
