St. Thomas: Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn Scene Shot At Magen’s Bay

Though not confirmed officially media sources and the rumor mill have stated that over the weekend scenes for Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 were shot on St. Thomas. A film production crew along with movie stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart occupied the world famous Magens Bay beach.

On Monday, the V.I. Department of  Tourism issued a statement confirming that a movie was being filmed at the beach but no information pertaining to the movie, the actor, or production company were released. Tourism spokeswoman Luana Wheatley said, “In keeping with other high profile productions of this kind, this was a closed set.” The Tourism Department worked in conjunction with DPNR Marine Division and the Magens Bay Authority to secure permits.

A barge and film crew was seen as early as Thursday setting up on the west end of the beach. This area of the beach was cordoned off from the public and a portion of the ocean was secured. Magens Bay workers speculated that a portion of the fifth and final installment of the Twilight franchise was being re-filmed. Popular blogs and fan sites have stated that the original scene was scrapped in Brazil and a last minute shoot in St. Thomas was planned for the honeymoon scene between the two main characters.

According to the local media, one of the film’s producers and a key grip refused to confirm that scenes were being filmed for the upcoming movie nor did they deny.

The Twilight Saga chronicles the romance between Bella, a human teenage girl and Edward her vampire lover. The now popular movie series originated from novels by Stephenie Meyer. In the novel the couple go to a fictional island off the coast of Brazil to celebrate their honeymoon.

The V.I. Department of Tourism estimates that approximately $1 million was spent in the territory over a week that included professional services, hotels, food, and other expenses according to Luana Wheatley. The shoot reportedly employed slightly more than 60 residents.

Several pictures and a video captured Stewart, in a green bikini and Pattinson, on the beach and in the water.  Details on filming will be disclosed at a later date once permission is granted by the production company. The U.S. territory competes annually with the rest of the world to be chosen as a film location. This year, the department will attend a film trade show in June to generate interest.
