Beyoncé: Run the World (Girls) Billboard Awards Performance

At last night’s Billboard Music Awards Show Beyoncé was awarded the Billboard Millennium Award  which she received from her mother, Tina Knowles and nephew Juelz. The singer also performed her new single, “Run the World (Girls),” off of her upcoming album “4” for the first time on network television on ABC.

Several of Beyonce’s close relatives, famous friends and collaborators — including First Lady Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, The Dream, U2′s Bono, Babyface, Stevie Wonder, sister Solange and her son Daniel “Juelz” Smith, Barbra Streisand, Matthew Knowles and Tina Knowles — took part in the Billboard Millennium Award presentation sharing personal messages about the singer’s accomplishments and impact on music.

The backdrop of her performance showed virtual duplicates of  the singer on a projection screen as well as  an army of  100 back-up dancers moving to the girl-power anthem. A breathless Beyoncé thanked her parents, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland, and original group members Letoya Luckett and Latavia Roberson. Beyonce ended her speech by thanking her husband –  “I love me some Jay-Z,” she said, as the rap star smiled and nodded and a unanimous “aww” echoed throughout Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Arena.

Beyoncé: Run the World(Girls) Video Teaser (Major Lazer Riddim)

You’re probably wondering why I’ve chosen to blog about Beyoncé’s new single “Run the World(Girls)”. For those of us that are familiar with Dancehall music the riddim for this song was super popular in 2009/2010. It was also used on the Jamaican cartoon “Major Lazer” spawining many songs including:  “Hold the Line”, “Pon de Floor”, and “Keep It Going Louder.”  The riddim itself is a collaborative music and cartoon effort by DJs/Producers Switch and Diplo who previously worked with UK rapper M.I.A. Artists featured on the track include:  Santigold, Vybz Kartel, Ward 21, Busy Signal, Nina Sky, Amanda Blank, Mr. Vegas, Turbulence, Mapei, T.O.K, Prince Zimboo, Leftside and others.

I’ve heard people hating on Beyonce about stealing the riddim but in all actuality that’s not true. The R&B/Pop singer has sampled the track and brought it to the forefront. The song was written by The Dream and Beyoncé, with production by Switch/DipLo (M.I.A., Santigold), Shea Taylor, and Bey of course.  I’m looking forward to the premiere of her new video…Beyoncé to the rescue!
