Machel Montano, Damian Marley, Gyptian top IRAWMA

The International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) comes to the Caribbean region this year with the ceremony set for Trinidad on May 28.

Topping the list of nominees is Reggae act Gyptian who is nominated in eight categories; followed by Trinidad and Tobago’s King of Soca, and recent winner of the Soca Monarch and Road March titles, Machel Montano who is nominated in seven categories. Also copping seven nods is Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley.

Reggae rhythm tag team Sly and Robbie received six nominations, while Dancehall star Vybz Kartel gained five. Other multiple nominees, includes: Jah Cure, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, I-Octane, JW and Blaze, Queen Ifrica, Shaggy, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Roy Cape, Romain Virgo, Tarrus Riley, Third World, Pitt Bull, Gramps Morgan, Kernel Roberts, Marcia Griffiths among others.

The 2010 nominees were disclosed by, Ephraim Martin, President of Martin’s International, organizers of the event.

The 30th IRAWMA will be held at the National Academy of the Performing Arts (NAPA), in Port of Spain. The celebrations will continue on May 29, with a concert of the nominees and winners, Reggae meets Soca and Chutney, at the Queens Park Savannah also in Port Of Spain Trinidad.

Martin notes that IRAWMA goes beyond the realm of simply awarding and acknowledging Reggae/Jamaican music. The ceremony also continues to recognize the wealth of regional (Caribbean) talent as evidenced by this year’s nominees comprising individuals and acts which represent the Caribbean, African and Latin American Diaspora.

Hush 2: End the Silence Award Winning Movie


The award winning HUSH 2 – End the Silence, a movie, written, directed, and produced in Barbados by Step by Step Productions, will be screened in Antigua from Friday March 25 to Sunday April 3 at Deluxe Cinema.

HUSH 2 is the creative genius of Marcia Weekes, who owns the company along with her husband Dave. According to Weekes,”The company’s main objective is to provide wholesome entertainment and edutainment within the Caribbean region and beyond. To date, our movies have been met with overwhelming response in a number of islands.”

Step by Step Productions has created three feature-length movies to date, including HUSH 2 – End the Silence. The other two productions are HUSH1 and HUSH3 – Twisted Innocence. Each of these action dramas takes a look at some of the social issues revolving around the youth in our region  and suggests solutions in ways which are exciting and appealing.

Award-Winning Caribbean Movie At DeluxeHUSH-2 

HUSH 2 – End the Silence is a riveting and suspenseful movie depicting the reality of many Caribbean youth. It deals with the sexual abuse of children, violence in schools, and parenting issues.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, and Youth Affairs in Antigua has endorsed the movie, and it is expected that many students will come out to see it. The film has also been endorsed by the Ministries of Education in Jamaica and Barbados,  and has been seen  by 22 high schools in Barbados and 20 schools in Jamaica. HUSH 2 ran for eight weeks in Barbados and two weeks in Jamaica.

Although written for young people, its message is far-reaching and impacts adults, including parents who are strongly encouraged to come out and view the film.

HUSH 2 has won a UNICEF Award, A NIFCA gold award, and the NIFCA Best Fiction Award.

St. Croix Food & Wine Experience

What’s better than a day of food & wine? Well, a week of fine food & wine of course! That’s exactly what the St. Croix and  Food Experience offers to Virgin Islands residents and visitors alike annually. This showcase has been heralded as one of the Ten Best International Food and Wine Festivals by Forbes Travel. These series of event can be traced back to the headline event ‘A Taste of St. Croix” now in its 11th year.

This year’s week of events will take place April 10-16th, 2011 at various locations throughout the island. Be prepared to see and interact with well known chefs, celebrity judges, and vintners!
